Farmyard Scene
c. 1872–74
This painting’s small scale, loose brushstrokes, and carefully observed interplay of sunlight and shadow suggest that it was composed and painted outdoors. Homer lived in New York City during the 1870s but traveled frequently to the countryside to paint, hike, and fish—a reflection of the growing nostalgia, in an increasingly industrialized country, for a simpler way of life.
