Alfred Sisley
English, 1839–1899
The Thames at Hampton Court
1874
In 1874, Sisley participated in the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris. Later that year, he visited London and painted a dozen works exploring a stretch of the Thames around Hampton Court in different atmospheric conditions. This small canvas records the view on a tranquil day, with sailboats and swans floating on the water. The composition is simple and the modeling sketchy, the artist’s attention focused on the play of light on the surface of the river and in the cloud-filled sky.
