Alfred Sisley
English, 1839–1899
The Loing and the Mills of Moret, Snow Effect
1891
Sisley probably painted this snowy landscape outdoors in a single session during the unusually cold winter of 1891. Poplars cast long blue shadows across the riverbank—their trunks reflected in the icy water—while wispy clouds float across the blue sky. The artist used a cool, silvery palette and applied paint in thin, liquid strokes to convey the crisp atmosphere of a winter’s day.
