Jan Gossaert
Flemish, c. 1472–1532
Anna van Bergen
c. 1526–30
Gossaert was widely celebrated in sixteenth-century Burgundy for his ability to capture a lively, yet dignified likeness. Anna van Bergen, dressed luxuriously in ermine and pearls, holds a folded piece of paper. This hints at her ability to read and write, a skill usually restricted to the aristocracy during the Renaissance. The sitter was married to Adolf of Burgundy, who was admiral of the Netherlands and one of Gossaert’s foremost patrons.
