French, born in the Hague, active by 1533–died 1575
Possibly Sir John Chichester
c. 1540–45
The identity of the gentleman in this portrait remains uncertain, though he may be Sir John Chichester, a captain in the English navy who was knighted by Queen Mary in 1553. Corneille was a very successful portraitist, eventually serving as court painter to King Henry II of France.
