Giovanni Boldini
Italian, 1842–1931
Recital
c. 1884
A woman leans over a piano, her posture suggesting that she is either a performer or eagerly observing a performance. Her head and torso are painted in detail, while other parts of the image are indicated less precisely. This handling, and the strip of brown paint running along the left edge of the canvas that covers already painted forms, suggests Recital may have been intended as a preliminary sketch rather than a finished work.
