This small, rapidly painted study includes few precise details, yet the painting’s dramatic mood hints at the possibility of a narrative. The young woman, her face in shadow, is dressed in white and wears a cross around her neck. Her expression and her clasped hands suggest a moment of intense emotion and perhaps anxious prayer.
